NOTICE
The year 2011 brought many favorable changes for Survival Resources, not only in product development, but in consulting agreements and private training. For 2011, we also committed to both sponsoring, attending, and teaching at the Dirttime Event in California, as well as the Pathfinder Gathering in Ohio. We only have so much time, and providing open enrollment courses is very time consuming. Although we received many emails and calls when we closed our open enrollment courses in 2010, we now find many people who commit to a course, have no problem canceling at the last minute. When two or three people do this, it can cause us to fall below our minimum and necessitates canceling the course, which is unfair to those students ready to attend.
We continue in various endeavors to make our products division one of the best out there for survival kits, survival kit components, and emergency preparedness products. We are committed to our customers and those efforts and therefore have made the difficult decision to close our training division. Please don't misinterpret our position... We love to teach, and even though we have never made much of a profit from that endeavor, we find we must focus our efforts on the profitable aspect of our business.
There are many fine survival schools available out there. But pick them carefully as all are not created equal. It seems that almost every day there is a new school opening and you should make an effort to determine if the instruction you desire is being offered. Again, don't misinterpret our statement. There are some very good schools out there with excellent instructors. However, there are also those who are attempting to "cash in" on the new interest in survival and some training is poor, or even dangerous.
Therefore, we officially take our hat out of the survival training arena for open enrollment courses. Of course, we will be teaching at various events, and our private training will continue. In order to preserve and remember those that have trained with us, we will leave the "Outdoor Skills Courses" page up on our website. We thank all those who took the time to attend one of our courses. We leave the future to those who have entered the arena. We wish them all well, and always remember... Survival is not a game!

Our Open-Air Classroom

Our Field Kitchen
When we first decided to offer outdoor skills courses, we noticed that many of the available schools offered various extended programs of a week or more. Because of various budget and time constraints, not everyone could attend an extended course. But we realized they still needed to learn. For this reason, in order to accommodate everyone, we designed various types of courses so everyone could learn skills on their budget and time schedule.
Our philosophy and strategy for providing courses is always evolving. We have had excellent success offering custom courses to organizations, academic institutions, various agencies, and private groups. These courses can be scheduled to accommodate both the clients needs and our availability.
We break our courses into two individual areas; Seminars, and Survival Courses. The following will explain each of these areas as well as detail the advantages and disadvantages of the program type.
SPECIAL EVENTS
John is often invited as a guest instructor at Special Events around the country. John really enjoys these type of events because he has the opportunity to meet new people from all over the country, so when he can work it into the schedule, he goes.

At the 2nd Annual Pathfinder Gathering in Ohio, John taught a class on Survival Kits and co-taught a class on tarps with Steve (Critr Gitr) Davis.

John was a guest instructor at Dirttime 2009 with many other prominent instructors.
SEMINARS
Seminars are offered as a part of an on going education for those who have minimal time or budget. Seminars are offered at various locations as well as at a clients business premises.

We have conducted seminars for various groups and organizations, as well as provided custom seminars to certain corporate clients.
OUTDOOR SKILLS COURSES

Outdoor Skills Courses are longer in duration than seminars. They are more intensive, with more "Hands-On" practice of technique by students. Students leave these courses with more confidence in their ability to actually use their new skills.
Our Survival Skills Weekend Course was featured in the "Escape" section of The New York Times on August 1st, 2008. For more information on that article, click here. If you would like to see more photos taken at that course by Les Stone, click here.

In the field classroom lectures provide the basics for the topics being taught.

Instructors demonstrate the techniques first so students can see how it's done.

Students then go into the field to learn practical application, so they learn by doing.

When students complete projects, they demonstrate and test them.

Each evening , students sit around the campfire and discuss lessons and make pine needle tea.
